For several of the Newcastles of the World, our name simply derives from having one or more castles, and one of them being a “new” castle which replaces a previous one.
For some Newcastles, the castle no longer exists but the history of the place is still associated with the castle, and some “Newcastles” have dedicated castle museums whether or not the castle still exists.
Some other Newcastles may not owe their name directly to a castle, but still have other fortifications which are an important part of their history.
