Vladimír Hokr re-elected in Nové Hrady
New Lord Mayor for Newcastle NSW
Many congratulations to Nuatali Nelmes, who has been elected as Lord Mayor of Newcastle, New South Wales. This follows the election last month of her Labor Party colleague Tim Crakanthorp as the new Member of the New South Wales State Parliament to represent Newcastle. Both Nuatali and Tim come to their new positions from having been Newcastle City Councillors.
The mayoral election result (15 November) was:
– Nuatali Nelmes (Labor): 29,885 (42.94%)
– Brad Luke (Independent): 15,915 (22.87%)
– Therese Doyle (Greens): 9967 (14.32%)
– Aaron Buman (Independent): 7836 (11.26%)
– David Chapman (Independent): 3533 (5.08%)
– Rod Holding (Independent): 1323 (1.90%)
– Joe Ferguson (Australia First): 1143 (1.64%)
Married to Stuart and with three young children, Nuatali studied at Newcastle High School and then the University of Newcastle NSW, and has been working for the trade union United Voice.
She was first elected to Newcastle City Council in 2008. Nuatali has lived in Newcastle for many years, and is active in a wide range of community work.

Neuchâtel – Chocolatissimo!
Neuchâtel chocolate is in the spotlight for a whole week, with the first of a new Festival, called Chocolatissimo, from November 1 to 8 !
It’s a whole week dedicated to chocolate with tasting sessions, displays, music, workshops, even theatre!
“This project embodies the determination of the City Council to be proactive in promoting tourism in Neuchâtel,” said Olivier Arni, Leader of the Council. Chocolatissimo promotes the rich history of chocolate in Neuchatel, and our many excellence confectioners and chocolatiers. Brands such as Wodey-Suchard, Walder and Schmid have great products and are valued and special ambassadors for Neuchâtel”

Successful conference in Nové Hrady
Over sixty delegates from 10 different “Newcastles” gathered in Nové Hrady in South Bohemia, Czech Republic from 28 April to 4 May. We thank Mayor Vladimir Hokr and his organising team for their hospitality and for putting on a strong programme of workshops and cultural activities.
The Newcastles of the World alliance emerges from the conference stronger and with clearer priorities and firm commitments for funding our future activities.

Newcastle’s Own Winter Olympic Gold Medal Winner
Not only did the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team win gold at the recent Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia in a heart stopping game against the Americans, but Tara Watchorn, one of the triumphant Canadian women, was from Newcastle, Ontario.
On the day of the gold medal game the community hall in Newcastle was packed with people watching the game on a gigantic screen. The game was specially streamed in by satellite courtesy of the parent municipality Clarington.
